Your Pan Plan
Each pan gets exact quantities before the stove turns on.
Pan A
4 servings
1½ pounds 93/7 lean ground beef
1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
1 can petite-diced tomatoes
2 cups total tomato liquid + broth
1 can black beans
1 cup frozen corn
1 bell pepper
1 tablespoon oil
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 cup shredded cheddar
1 lime
RICE RULE
Use regular long-grain white rice.
Brown, instant, microwave, converted, and parboiled rice need different liquid and timing. Rinse until the runoff is much less cloudy, then drain well.
SMART SHOPPING
Shortcuts stay honest.
Pre-diced pepper, pre-shredded cheese, frozen corn, and no-salt-added canned goods save prep without changing the core method.
THE GAME PLAN
Let's Cook
01
Set up the pan plan
Confirm the serving count and Pan A, B, and C assignments. Gather each pan’s ingredients before turning on the stove. If cooking in waves, begin with Pan A and keep uncooked beef refrigerated.
02
Prep and rinse
Dice the bell pepper to ¼ inch. Rinse the rice under cool water until the runoff is much less cloudy, then drain well. Rinse and drain the beans. Drain the tomatoes over a liquid measuring cup and save every drop.
03
Measure the cooking liquid
Add low-sodium broth to the reserved tomato liquid until each pan has ½ cup total liquid per assigned person. Keep every pan’s liquid separate.
04
Choose the seasoning
Mix the homemade seasonings, or measure the Rookie Cheat Code amount assigned to each pan. Do not add the packet’s separate water.
05
Soften the pepper
Heat the oil over medium-high. Add the finely diced pepper and cook for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it begins to soften.

06
Brown the beef safely
Add the beef and break it into small crumbles. Cook 6–8 minutes until no raw sections remain. Check several thick clusters: ground beef must reach 160°F. Spoon excess grease into a heat-safe bowl, never the sink, and clean everything that touched raw beef.

07
Build the flavor
Lower the heat to medium. Add tomato paste and the selected seasoning. Stir constantly for 1 minute until the paste darkens slightly and the seasoning smells toasted; do not let it burn.

08
Toast the rice
Stir in the rinsed, well-drained rice and cook for 1 minute so every grain is coated with the seasoned mixture.

09
Load the skillet
Add the drained tomatoes, black beans, frozen corn, and pre-measured tomato-juice-and-broth mixture. Scrape up the browned bits and stir once until evenly combined.
10
Find the simmer
Raise the heat to medium-high until small bubbles break across the surface without a violent boil. Stir once, reduce the heat to low, and cover tightly.
11
Let the rice work
Cook covered for 18 minutes. Keep the lid closed and do not stir. Start each pan’s timer when that pan is covered.

12
Check and adjust
Open the lid away from your face and taste rice from the center. Choose the texture you see: tender with a little moisture, firm and dry, or tender but soupy.

13
Melt and rest
Remove the pan from heat, squeeze lime over it, scatter cheddar across the top, cover, and rest for 5 minutes so the cheese melts and the moisture settles.

14
Fluff and build
Fluff gently from the edges toward the center. Spoon one generous bowl per person and let everyone add their own toppings.
ATHLETE FUEL CHECK
A full training bowl.
One athlete-sized bowl with six ounces of 93/7 beef, rice, beans, corn, vegetables, and ¼ cup cheddar, before optional toppings.
Nutrition is a practical estimate and excludes optional toppings. Beef, broth, canned goods, cheese, tomato paste, and seasoning brands can change the totals; packet seasoning can raise sodium substantially.
✓ The core recipe can be gluten-free when broth, tomato paste, canned goods, spices, and seasoning are verified gluten-free✓ Cheddar contains milk; use dairy-free melting cheese or leave it off✓ Corn can be omitted without changing the cooking liquid! Use clean cookware, utensils, measuring tools, and surfaces for a gluten-free version in a mixed kitchen.! Broth, taco seasoning, cheese, canned goods, chips, salsa, and toppings vary by brand; check every label for the athlete’s allergens.
FIRST-BOWL STRATEGY
Start familiar.
Start with a smaller scoop and add one familiar topping—cheese, crushed chips, salsa, or Greek yogurt. The tiny pepper pieces cook into the seasoned beef.
TRAINING-DAY UPGRADE
Turn up the fuel.
The standard bowl already provides a strong mix of protein and carbohydrates. After an especially hard or long practice, add warm tortillas, fruit, or an extra scoop of rice. Greek yogurt adds a cool finish and a little more protein.
MAKE IT YOURS
One skillet. Your finish.
Keep it mild
Use mild chili powder or a mild packet and serve hot sauce separately.
Bring the heat
Add cayenne to the homemade seasoning or top individual bowls with jalapeño and hot sauce.
Vegetable-nervous
Dice the pepper very small, or begin with half the displayed amount and build toward the full amount next time.
Dairy-free
Skip the cheddar or use dairy-free melting cheese; avoid Greek yogurt and sour cream toppings.
Extra crunch
Add crushed tortilla chips only after serving so they stay crisp.
More vegetables
Stir in finely chopped spinach during the final uncovered adjustment or serve shredded lettuce on top.
No black beans
Leave them out without reducing the cooking liquid; the rice amount has not changed.
MONDAY LEFTOVER MOVE
Run it back differently.
Turn the skillet into burritos, quesadillas, nachos, stuffed baked potatoes, scrambled-egg breakfast tacos, or taco salad. Add a small splash of water before reheating. Refrigerate in shallow containers within 2 hours—or 1 hour above 90°F—use within 3–4 days, and reheat to 165°F.
